A jewelry store owner chased two would-be robbers from his store when he pulled out his own handgun, according to police.
The incident happened about 3:44 p.m. Tuesday at Harry’s Gold, 700 Route 18 in East Brunswick.
“Two males had entered the Route 18 gold store after the store was empty of all customers,” East Brunswick Det. Sgt. Kevin F. Zebro said in a statement.
One of the males brandished a black handgun while the second male attempted to enter a locked office.
The owner, who was alone in the store, pulled out his own handgun.
“Upon seeing the owner’s handgun, both suspects then fled the store without any proceeds and ran north on Highway 18,” Zebro said in the statement.
Police said the owner has a legal permit to carry a handgun.
Police from East Brunswick and South River conducted a search of the area, but the suspects were not found.
Both suspects wore black masks, police said.
One wore a light-gray hooded sweatshirt and the other wore a black hooded sweatshirt.
Anyone with any information or may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Detective John Breen of the East Brunswick Police Department’s Investigative Division at 732-390-6990.
